I set every rivet in the right flap except the four shown in the
picture above. I couldn't get a bucking bar behind these nor could I
reach them with my thin set yoke for my pneumatic rivet squeezer. This
skin gets cut later on to match the contour of the fuselage so I think I
will wait until then to set them. I might be able to get to them at that
time with the squeezer.
The rest of the riveting was pretty much straight forward. I learned
a couple of things that I will apply to the right flap. One is that the
factory heads for the rivets that join the back of the middle ribs to
the lip (spar?) on the bottom skin.should probably be in front. I had a
hard time getting a bucking bar inside the rib when I had the factory
head on the back side. Also, I will rivet on the ribs to the bottom skin
before riveting the bottom skin to the top skin. Riveting the ribs to
the skin is a pain since there is so little room for my big ape-like
hands.
Another lesson is that the advice in the manual to use a v-shaped
holder is good advice. I didn't use this holder so I ended up having to
drill out a couple of rivets when the back parts of the ribs didn't end
up flush against the skins. I kluged together a v-shaped holder using a
carpentry clamp to hold the skins flush against the backs of the ribs.
It is past midnight and I am pooped. |
